He will be responsible for training staff and providing treatment to our American soldiers and their families.

Professional Counseling Career: Brent H Judd entered his career with the State of Utah in 1974 after receiving a bachelor’s degree in Sociology. During his 28 year career with the state he held a variety of positions in two different agencies: Division of Child and Family Services and the Division of Juvenile Justice Services. These two agencies gave him a rich experience in counseling with individuals of all ages as well as families. Later, in 1984 he received his Master’s of Social Work Degree from the University of Utah and became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.

He was instrumental in establishing an agency known as ISAT (The Intermountain Sexual Abuse Treatment Center) in southern Utah both Cedar City and St. George. This agency still exists nearly 20 years later and treats the victims and offenders of domestic violence. During his time at ISAT he had the rare opportunity of providing psychotherapy to inmates housed in a satellite site of the Utah State Prison. This opportunity helped him to understand group dynamics and the power in group therapy. He was the first clinical director of Kolob Canyons Residential Treatment Center a program for adolescent girls with eating disorders, depression, anxiety and other DSM diagnosis.

For 15 years he supervised a secure unit for the Division of Juvenile Justices. These secure units house some of the most difficult young men and women in the juvenile judicial system. He was quick to gain an appreciation of how youth housed in groups alter their behaviors at times and to also see how a positive peer culture could make a different in the lives of certain youth. During this time he was also able to see the great value that line staff could provide these youth while making an effort to change not only behavior but values. He realized that those individuals working day in and day out with the youth could have much more impact for positive or negative depending on the employee than the therapist who saw them on a reduced schedule. He was able to see the value of hiring employees who loved these youth and believed in them and their power to change. He believes it is essential and absolutely necessary to train these line staff and supervise them in their responsibilities.

As previously mentioned he worked for the State of Utah for 28 years and retired. It had been his dream to practice full time with private clients. He had opened a private practice in April of 1984. Over the years he has seen anywhere from 10-15 clients each week after hours. This private work has given him a great opportunity to work with clients who were voluntarily in therapy. He was able to see individuals who were motivated to change their lives and this was a very positive influence on him having worked for so many years with clients who were court ordered or under the jurisdiction of a state agency. After approximately three years of operating a full time practice he realized that he missed the friendships of co workers and the therapeutic relationships of working with other counselors and staff. He began looking for opportunities to re-enter the workforce in an agency where he could use by extensive clinical skills to help therapists in need of clinical supervision and to use his relationship skills with paraprofessional staff who too were working in this field. With those factors in mind he applied for the Clinical Director position at Turning Point Family Care. Turning Point had taken over a small residential treatment program from the Southwest Mental Health Center. This residential center housed young men who had acted out sexually and were ordered into the States custody for placement. Recently Turning Point moved into a new facility built for 30 youth. The population has grown with this new facility and the foster care program has grown with it. He currently provides supervision for 5 full time therapists and 1 part time contractor.

Education: Brent H Judd received his Bachelor’s degree in Sociology with a Social Work certificate in June of 1974 from Southern Utah University. He went on to receive a Master’s Degree of Social Work from the University of Utah in June of 1981. After undergoing supervision and two years of paid social work experience he became clinically licensed to practice social work in April of 1984. This is when he immediately opened a private counseling practice.

Areas of Expertise: Living in rural Utah has given him the opportunity of working in various social work settings where diversity of skills was absolutely necessary. He worked for agencies which were willing to invest in him through continued training which allowed for over 40 hours of continuing education units every two years for these 24 years. He is a cognitive behavioral therapist specializing in depressive and anxiety disorders. He is NOJOS (Network on Juveniles Offending Sexually) certified. He is only one of a few therapists certified south of the Wasatch front in Utah to specialize in this area. He has vast trainings in family and group therapy. He only works with chemical addiction issues if his clients are also attending a 12 step program. He has personally worked with hundreds of victims of domestic violence and feel very well trained to work with Post traumatic Stress Disorders and have had great success in this area.

Insurance Providers: He has been a preferred provider for many different insurance companies since 1984. He is currently on the panels of Blue Cross/ Blue Shield, Intermountain Health Care, Public Employees Health Program, Educator’s Mutual, and more. He is a certified Employee Assistance Counselor for IHC directions, APS Healthcare, Reliant Behavioral Health and Cascade Center. Cascade EAP provides services to many Federal Employees in the western United States.
